Christine Parent of the Centre for Topographic Information in Sherbrooke (CITS) is the Assistant Editor for French content in Geomatica, an internationally recognized scientific journal, published quarterly by the Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG) for geomatics professionals.

Christine has acted as Assistant Editor of this journal on a volunteer basis for over 20 years. In October 2007 she received a citation from CIG President Bob Parkinson for her exceptional contribution to Geomatica and the Institute.

The prize was awarded on October 4, 2007, during a luncheon meeting celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Institute, during GeoConference Québec 2007. Over 500 people were present when the prize was awarded.

Each year, CIG's president has the honour of awarding a President's citation to a volunteer member of the Institute who, through his or her efforts, has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to the CIG. Along with Christine, two other people received a presidential award this year: Costas Armenakis (Centre for Topographic Information in Ottawa) and Ken Allred.

The year 2007 was rather significant for Christine, as she obtained her bachelor's degree in surveying from Laval University in the spring of 1982, and began her career at NRCan headquarters in Ottawa that following September - 25 years ago! While in Ottawa in 1985, she discovered her interest in translation and editing, and started to work with the CIG. In 1990, Christine started a job at the CTI in Sherbrooke. Her desire to improve her translation skills led her to complete a certificate in translation from the Université de Sherbrooke in 1997. Even today, after more than 20 years as the assistant editor (French) of Geomatica, her enthusiasm has not waned.

"I would like to thank NRCan and more specifically the directors of the CTI in Sherbrooke who allowed me to pursue my commitment to the Institute for all these years," mentioned Christine. NRCan has also supported the CIG with an annual grant for Geomatica as well as with the presentation of student awards for the last several years.

In addition to being honoured by receiving this award before her peers, the awards ceremony in Quebec gave Christine the opportunity to reunite with colleagues with whom she had studied for her bachelor's degree at the Université Laval so many years ago. She also enjoyed participating in the GeoConference and the luncheon with astronaut Steve MacLean, who was the guest speaker.

"I am happy to be able to help the CIG and the larger geomatics community in my own way," noted Christine. "I also have to thank an exceptional colleague, Carol Railer, who is responsible for the production of Geomatica and with whom I have had the great pleasure of working."
